Faced with growing demands, increased scrutiny, and shifting views on the value and obligations of donors, philanthropy is undergoing profound transformation. Philanthropic leaders are asking increasingly how their organizations can drive impact beyond simply providing funding. In response to this surge, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors developed The Philanthropy Framework as part of its multi-year program of global collaborative research. This analytical framework gives philanthropic organizations a practical structure to align resources for maximum impact. The Philanthropy Framework details how three core elements—charter, social compact and operating model—define an organization’s culture, inform its structure, and shape how it carries out its work.
Shifting societal norms and expectations are affecting philanthropy’s role in and relationship with society and directly impact the social compact considerations of The Philanthropy Framework, most notably, accountability, legitimacy and transparency. As scrutiny and pressure to demonstrate value escalate, philanthropies are forced to re-examine their role in society, legitimacy, public trust, and how they engage with the diverse ecosystem of stakeholders. This convening can be a first step in that reassessment.
