Donor-Advised Funds

Our unique donor-advised fund vehicle, The Philanthropic Collaborative (TPC), can be used for personal or family philanthropy, international grantmaking, donor collaboratives, or to incubate nonprofit initiatives through fiscal sponsorship.

A donor-advised fund offers the opportunity to create an easy-to-establish, low cost, flexible vehicle for charitable giving as an alternative to direct giving or creating a foundation or trust. Donors enjoy administrative convenience, cost savings and tax advantages by conducting their grantmaking through a public charity.

Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors can provide philanthropic advisory, program and management services for foundations, charitable trusts and donor-advised funds, whether or not these funds are in our own donor-advised vehicle, The Philanthropic Collaborative. In some cases, donors who are otherwise giving funds directly may wish to establish a fund through TPC, especially for international giving, giving collaboratives or other special projects.

All donors using The Philanthropic Collaborative have access to the expert program service of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. Further, our staff can administer all aspects of grantmaking through a donor-advised fund, including conducting due diligence, issuing grant letters and checks, wiring funds, maintaining records and generating reports.

Because The Philanthropic Collaborative is housed in a public charity, donors receive the maximum tax deduction available, while avoiding excise taxes and other restrictions imposed on private foundations. Further, donors do not incur the cost of establishing and administering a private foundation, including staffing and legal fees.

Establishing a fund through The Philanthropic Collaborative can be started with a donation of any approved type of asset. Donations are irrevocable, and there are some legal restrictions on funds.

A group of donors sought the expertise of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors to protect the most critical forest land in the Northeastern U.S. As part of our work with this donor collaborative, we:

  • Helped unify 45 different nonprofit organizations into an effective conservation alliance;
  • Evaluated, funded and monitored over 100 grants; and,
  • Leveraged our donors support by three to one with funding from leading foundations.

The result was a vibrant conservation alliance that has thus far preserved more than 100,000 acres of endangered wilderness.
