There’s a new conversation about giving emerging in New York and across the nation, fueled by a rapid, massive influx of new donors and money. At the same time, a surge in the number of charities is bringing new levels of competition for donor dollars. Last year’s natural disasters in Asia and along the Gulf Coast underscored the forces of globalization on giving, and evolving information technologies have just begun to make the world a smaller, more transparent place, for better or worse: new scandals in self-dealing, even among some of the nation’s more iconographic nonprofits, have diminished the public’s confidence in charities.
