Donor-advised funds have never been more popular – new accounts rose 8.8 percent, to 66,979 in 2002-2003, according to a survey of 86 organizations by The Chronicle of Philanthropy. It is estimated by Charles Schwab Advisors that there are now more DAFs in the United States than there are private foundations. With a DAF, donors make irrevocable donations of assets to nonprofits that do all of the “foundation” work for them –such as investing the charitable assets and tracking the receipt of funds for the donor.
